Veterinarians are accountable to the public, their clients, patients, and colleagues for the quality of service they provide. In Alberta, every veterinary facility must meet certain standards.
Each year, every veterinary facility in Alberta completes a detailed self-audit Quality Assurance (QA) Guide. The ABVMA hires veterinarians to be PIPS inspectors to verify the submitted QA Guide of every veterinary facility in Alberta once every three years. Veterinarians support the process by paying fees. No taxpayer dollars are used in this process.
After an inspection the inspector will review any minor deficiencies with the facility owner. Any major deficiencies will be referred to the Practice Inspection and Practice Standards Committee. These must be corrected or addressed within 30 days. Once a facility passes their practice inspection, a letter of approval is sent to the practice.
Look for the framed Quality Assurance Certificate displayed in your veterinarian’s practice. Your veterinarian has earned it; you have a right to expect it.
