*What’s the difference between ISO Chips and Canadian
Standard Chips?
In 1994, the CVMA adopted a position statement recommending that
microchips used in Canada adhere to a consistent technology to avoid
incompatibility between competing products. Chips adhering to the
specifications of this technology are referred to as Canadian User-Based
Standard chips (CUBS) or Canadian Standard chips. This type of chip
generally complies with recovery networks across North America.
In 1996, the International Standards Organization (ISO) developed
international standards pertaining to microchip technology. This
type of chip has since become the global standard chip – outside
of North America.
Currently, there is a movement to migrate towards using ISO chips
– for purposes of global mobility, to allow for increased
competition by way of providing a platform for international manufacturers
to enter the Canadian market, etc…Microchip Readers &
